ROAD CLOSED: BETWEEN WORCESTER AND DE DOORNS AFTER TAXI COLLISION WITH A COW AND TRUCK.
Worcester/De Doorns: Tuesday, 26 April 2016
Around 06h30 this morning an off-duty paramedic from ER24 came across an accident between a minibus taxi and a truck. The accident occurred on the N1 between Worcester and De Doorns where 1 man died and 5 other people were injured. It is believed that the driver of the taxi had swerved to avoid a cow in the road. The taxi collided with the cow and finally collided head-on with the truck.
On inspection, paramedics found the body of the taxi driver lying trapped inside the taxi. Unfortunately, the man had already succumbed to his fatal injuries. Nothing more could be done for the patient and he was declared dead on scene. Two other patients were found in a critical condition, the male driver of the truck and a female passenger from the taxi. Both these patients were trapped in the vehicles they travelled in.
Rescue workers had to use Jaws-of-Life equipment.on these 2 patients and it took them around 45 minutes to free both patients. Thereafter, paramedics provided both patients with advanced life support interventions. Three other patients sustained only moderate injuries. All the patients were treated and transported to various hospitals for further treatment. The N1 was closed for some time due to the collision until Local authorities arrived on the scene for further investigations.
