KZN councillor’s house set alight, 12 suspects in custody
Twelve suspects have been taken into custody after the house and car of a ward 4 councillor was set alight at Shakashead, outside Ballito in KwaZulu Natal on Monday.
KwaZulu Natal police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane confirmed a service delivery protest turned violent and police fired rubber bullets to calm the situation.
“This morning, residents of Shakashead near Ballito barricaded the N2 freeway as well as R102 with burning tyres, trees and stones complaining about service delivery. Police were called to intervene. They had to use rubber bullets to disperse the crowd,” Major Thulani Zwane said.
“A councillor’s house and a vehicle was set alight at Shakashead. 12 suspects have been taken in custody while waiting for the complainant to open the case of arson,” Zwane said.
Motorists are advised to avoid the R102 road.
“N2 freeway has been cleared and only R102 is still closed. No arrests have been made,” Zwane said.
