‘Emirates Air’ Free Flight Tickets Scam Again Hitting Facebook

According to a post being shared across Facebook, airline Emirates is giving you the chance to win first class flights for you and five friends to a dream destination of your choice anywhere in the world along with $5000 spending money. And, claims the post, all you need do to win is share a promotional photo, comment ‘Thank-you’, like the Facebook Page the post comes from, and click the ‘Sign Up’ button on the Page.

However, the supposed prize promotion is a scam that is not associated with Emirates in any way. The fake Facebook Page is not giving away any flight tickets. The goals of the scam are to accumulate as many likes as possible for the bogus Facebook Page and trick people into submitted their personal information on dodgy third-party prize sites.

Sharing and commenting on the post ensures that it is seen by a growing number of Facebook users, many of whom will fall for the ruse and share and comment as well. And, during the course of the scam, the bogus Page will accumulate a great many new likes. The more likes a scam Page gathers, the more reach it has for future scam and spam promotions. Pages with high numbers of likes can also be sold on the black market to other scammers who will repurpose it to further their own goals.

If you click the ‘Sign up’ button as instructed, you will be taken to a third-party website that promises the chance to win further prizes in exchange for providing your name, home address, email address and phone numbers. But, entry conditions listed on the site will stipulate that, by participating you are giving permission for your personal information to be shared with other organisations for marketing purposes. Thus, you will soon begin receiving unwanted phone calls, text messages, emails, and surface letters offering a range of products and services you most likely neither want nor need.

And, even after participating as instructed, you will never get the chance to win the promised free flight tickets, which never existed to begin with.

The scammers who created the fake Facebook Page will earn commissions each time somebody provides their information via the ‘sign up’ website.

The real Emirates Facebook Page has Facebook’s blue ‘Verified’ tick and is simply called ‘Emirates’ not ‘Emirates Air.’ Emirates has responded to questions about the scam via the following comment on its Facebook Page:

The page you mentioned is a scam. Our competitions are always run from our official and verified social media channels. Our Corporate Communications & Legal Team is taking the necessary action. Thanks

A very similar scam was active in 2015. The scam again offered free Emirates flights in exchange for likes and shares. Many other high-profile airlines around the world have been targeted in different versions of the scam. Be wary of any Facebook post or Page that offers valuable prizes such as airline flights, cruises, cars, or store vouchers in exchange for liking, sharing, and providing your personal details via survey or prize offer sites. Scams like this continue to be very common on Facebook.
