One man has been killed and two others injured this afternoon after a head-on collision between a SUV and light motor vehicle on the R700 in Soutpan in the Free State.
ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on the scene and found both vehicles lying on the side of the road. The SUV was found lying on its roof.
On further inspection, paramedics found the bodies of a man and woman lying outside of the light motor vehicle.
On assessment, paramedics found that the man had already succumbed to his multiple fatal injuries. Nothing more could be done for the man and he was declared dead on the scene.
The woman was assessed and found to be in a serious condition.
On inspection of the overturned SUV, paramedics found a man lying motionless inside the vehicle. Rescue services quickly extricated the man and assessed him, finding that he had sustained numerous injuries leaving him in a critical condition.
Paramedics treated both patients and provided them with advanced life support interventions.
Once treated, the man was airlifted by a private medical helicopter to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment. The other patient was transported by ambulance.
The exact cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
